Summer of 1998: Was traded to the Halifax Mooseheads; but opts to turn pro instead.
Preseason: Received a tryout with Fort Wayne Komets of the IHL but was released.
Picked up by Dayton of the ECHL; waived.
Picked up off of waivers by Richmond Renegades; was in training camp for one day.
Offered a try-out with Orlando Solar Bears. Orlando liked what they saw, but felt that he needed time in the ECHL. Orlando's affiliate in the "E" is the Mississippi Sea Wolves. Max couldn't be assigned there due to the Sea Wolves and the Dayton Bombers having the same owners. So, two-way contract in hand, Max headed back to Richmond, VA.
October 30, 1998: First professional game; first professional win. 3-1 victory over the Roanoke Express
Nov. 01: First professional shutout vs Chesapeake Ice Breakers.
Novemer 02: Named ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of Oct. 27-Nov 01, after posting a 2-0-0 record with a .50 goals against average and a .985 save percentage.
November 26: Called up to the Orlando Solar Bears.
December 02: Gets first IHL start with the Bears against the Chicago Wolves.
December 03: Returned to Richmond at 4:30 in the afternoon, and is in goal against the Ice Breakers that night. Allows only one tally by the opposing team.
December 06: Shuts out visiting Peoria Rivermen 8-0
December 08, 1998: Goaltender of the week runner up for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 07.
December 15: Married Nathalie Genest in Reston, Va. Gingras' agent, Benjy Robins was his best man.
December 19: First professional goaltender fight vs David Brumby.
Between Max and Terry Friesen, the Renegades shutout the Wheeling Nailers.
December 23: Named as starting goaltender for the Northern Conference ECHL All-star team.
December 27: Shuts out the Charlotte Checkers 2-0.
December 28: Goaltender of the week runner up for the week of Dec. 21-27.
January 12, 1999: Gingras stopped 25 of 29 shots in a stand-on-his-head performance during the All-star game skills competition.
January 13: In the All-star game Max played 31:38 minutes and stopped 18 of 22 shots.
January 20: Records 4th shutout of the season, a 4-0 Renegades victory over the Johnstown Chiefs.
January 22: The magic continues as John Brophy's Hampton Roads Amdirals fail to score on Max. Amazingly enough, after the game the Admiral's radio broadcaster allegedly referred to Max as being "an average goalie on an average team".
January 25: Named ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of Jan. 18-24. Max's stats for the week were 3-0-0 with a 1.67 goals against average and a .949 save percentage. He recorded two shutouts during the week, tying the ECHL record of 5.
February 5: Gingras puts up a heroic effort only to see the Renegades lose to the Pee Dee Pride. Max finished the night with 40 saves. "Max was obviously the difference," said Coach Kaufman. "He gave us a chance to win. That's all you can ask."
February 13: Sets new ECHL record with his 6th shutout of the season, with a 2-0 victory over visiting Chesapeake Ice Breakers.
February 14: Less than 24 hours and a bus trip later, Max gets his 7th shutout. This is the second time this season that he has had back to back shutouts. The victim once again was the Johnstown Chiefs. In 10 periods of play the Richmond net-minders (Friesen and Gingras) have held the opposition to one goal.
February 15: Named ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of Feb. 8-14. Max's stats for the week were 2-1-0 with a 1.34 goals against average and a .959 save percentage.
February 19: Sets Renegades franchise-best record with his 21st win on the season.
March 6: After a 13-day layoff, Max and the Renegades come back not rusted but rather ready to play as they beat the Charlotte Checkers 5-1 in Charlotte
through March 27: No more shutouts, just solid goaltending as Max goes 12 game udefeated. Much of that is compiled on the road, as he wins all his games during the 'Gades 33 day/9 game road swing (6-0-0).
April 1: Named ECHL Rookie of the Year; becoming the first goalie in the league's history to win this honor. He was also the first Renegade to be selected.
April 6: Named ECHL Goaltender of the Year.

ECHL Goaltender of the Month--March/April. During this time frame, Max went 10-1-0, with a record of 2.13 gaa and a save percentage of .930. During 8 of these 11 games he allowed only 2 or less goals. Twice during March and April he posted 40-save performances.
April 8: Named to the year-end ECHL All-Stars; 1st team
1999 ECHL Playoffs:
1st round vs Hampton Roads. Record 3-1. Records 9-0 shutout in the 2nd game.
2nd round vs Toledo Storm. Renegades sweep Toledo 3 games to 0. Record 2-0.
Northern Conference Finals. Renegades sweep Roanoke 4 games to 0. Record 4-0. Records back to back shutouts in games 2 and 3.

Kelley Cup finals: Though the 'Gades will end up losing the cup to the Mississippi Sea Wolves, they take it to 7 games. Game 7 goes to double overtime before the 'Gades finally bow out. Max will record 2 more shutouts (games 1 and 4) against the Wolves during the series, setting another ECHL record (5 shutouts).
