July 29, 1999: Max signs a PTO contract with Providence of the American Hockey league. He will still have to tryout and make the team though.
Sept. 27: Training camp is over and Max makes the team. Was there ever any doubt? =)
Oct. 5: Local kid does good, gets first AHL start and win in an away game agaisnt Quebec, in front of a crowd that includes friends and family.
"We have to give credit to Maxime Gingras the first star of the game as he was exceptional tonight," said Quebec head coach Michel Therien. "It's been a long time since he played in front of his family and he gave an exceptional performance tonight. He was the story of the game."
Oct. 10: Led the Baby B's to a victory over Philadelphia, snapping a Bruins 4-yr losing streak to the Phantoms in the process.
Oct. 11: Nominated for the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the week award.
Nov. 4: Recorded first AHL point with an assist on Brandon Smith's goal.
Oct. 30: Byron Dafoe finally ends his contract dispute with Boston.
Nov. 15: Due to the Dafoe signing, John Grahame is sent back down to Providence. Bruins decide for the time being to go with 3 goaltenders but says it will only be a short time.
Nov. 26: Providence signs Max to an AHL contract and then loans him to the Richmond Renegades. The Renegades fans welcome their little goalie back with open arms. With the crowd fully supporting him, Max records a shutout over the visiting Trenton Titans.
Dec. 1: Providence recalls Max from Richmond and loans him out to the Houston Aeros of the International Hockey League.
Dec. 05: Gets his first (and only) IHL start with the Aeros. Though he lets in two goals in the first due to defensive breakdowns in the Aeros end, he stones the Michigan team the rest of the way. Despite the coach saying that Max played "just fine", Max rides the pine for 6 weeks, while Coach Lowe runs Chabot into the ground.
Jan. 7: Back in the air Max goes, this time back to Providence to fill in for the injured Grahame who mistook his finger for a bagel.
Jan. 15: Gets first start since returning to Providence. Though the Bruins lose, the Providence Journal credits him with giving a yeoman's effort.
Jan. 21: With Grahame recovered, Max is once again returned to Richmond. Though he struggles his first weekend back, the next weekend finds him returning to form in a game vs Wheeling.
Feb. 01: More frequent flyer miles are accumulated as Max is loaned to Orlando of the IHL. Max is told that he will most probably end the season there.
Feb. 03: Orlando's plans to start Max on Friday are put on hold as he suffers a broken finger during practice.
Feb. 11: Orlando, who just slightly over a week ago was down to one goaltender, finds themselves suddenly with 4 on their roster. Meanwhile in Richmond, the Gades find themselves short due to the call-up of Sean Matile to the Saint John Flames. Back on the plane Max goes and is the surprise starter for the Gades, who just earlier that morning were looking for an emergency back-up goalie.
Feb. 17: The Boston injury jinx continues as Robbie Tallas has his finger injured by a slapshot, nearly severing the top of it off. Once again, its Mighty Max to the rescue, jetting back up to Providence as Grahame is once again recalled to Boston. What starts out to be temporary assignments for the goalies become more permanent when Dafoe goes down a week later, with a season-ending knee injury.
Feb. 20: In a game that had two 1999-2000 Richmond Renegades in goal against each other in the AHL, Max's Bruins took on Saint John, with Sean Matile guarding the net for the Flames. The game featured a tussle at 18:27 of the 3rd. Both goalies joined in the frey and exchanged words and shoves at center ice. Considering Sean is 6'4", that had to have been quite a site. Both goalies were awarded 2-minute minors for leaving the crease.
Apr. 4: With the playoffs looming in the ECHL Richmond once again finds itself down to one goaltender when Dennis Bassett dislocates his shoulder. Providence agrees to release Max to Richmond a week early so that he can rejoin the Gades in time for the first game.
Apr. 09: Max struggles a bit in game one against the Trenton Titans, but his team mates fare no better as they allow 3 power play goals and 1 even-strength tally while only netting 2 goals of their own. By game two, Max is beginning to see the puck much better, but the Gades continue struggling with the penalty kill and their scoring dries up, as they find themselves down 2 games to none in a best of five playoff series. In game three Max turns in his strongest performance of the series, but the Titans cash in on two more power play goals. Once again the Gades fail to score and find themselves swept out of the first round. It was a sad ending to an obviously frustrating season for Max, but the young goalie did everything that was asked of him.
From the Richmond Times Dispatch on April 10th: "I think if you begin to evaluate his play after the second period of [Saturday's] game, he was right on," (Richmond coach, Mark) Kaufman said. "Even [Sunday] there were some point-blank shots, and he made a lot of things look easy. It took him four periods to get acclimated.
"The sad part is we weren't able to provide him any offense and give him a cushion to let us do what we have to do on the ice. It was a difficult task to come down and jump right in like he did. But he managed to get through it and held us in there."
