Max continues to draw kudos
Maxime Gingras has been unbeatable in goal for the Richmond RiverDogs, so you could appreciate coach Rod Langway's reluctance to bring even a temporary halt to such a good thing. Nevertheless, he gave Olivier Dannel his first pro start Sunday night at Adirondack, and the 21-year-old rookie responded by stopping 31 of 32 shots in a 6-1 romp over the struggling IceHawks. This was the third game in as many nights on an 1,810-mile road trip that also took the still-unbeaten'Dogs to Flint and Port Huron, Mich. "I was going to use [Dannel] in Port Huron, but Maxie played so well the night before, I thought I'll give him one more game," Langway said. "The kid played OK. He made four or five great saves. He got his feet wet." And the 6-4 210 pounder from Montreal likely will get another start when the RiverDogs (7-0-0) have their next excursion of four games in five days later this month. Meanwhile, Gingras "has done a great job," Langway said. "More than I could have expected. He stole one [4-3 shootout win at Flint]. Then we almost gave one away [4-3 at Port Huron] before what probably was our best game Sunday."
and also:
Late last week, with a game to play with Columbus before taking on the RiverDogs, Port Huron coach Bruce Ramsey noted his Beacons and Richmond were the two most penalized teams in the league and told The Times Herald, "There could be gloves dropped and blood shed." It didn't turn out that way. Port Huron trailed 4-0 before making a furious third-period comeback that just fell short, thanks to Gingras and no thanks to some dumb penalties, Langway said. Twenty-two minor penalties were called, equally divided. There were no fights. No blood.

Max is acclimating himself well in the UHL. After two weeks, he leads the leagues in number of wins (the RiverDogs are the only undefeated team left in the league), is 2nd in saves, and 3rd in minutes played.

Twenty-four hours earlier the same teams combined for 237 penalty minutes, including a major brouhaha with about five minutes remaining that included fisticuffs off the ice. Last night, there were no fights, just aggressive hard-hitting hockey in which the difference was a power play that had been powerless coming in and a magnificent 15-save third-period effort by Richmond goaltender Maxime Gingras. After Robin Bouchard beat Gingras high on the glove side with a spinning wrister from outside the left circle to give Muskegon the lead :59 into the final 20 minutes, the fifth-year pro slammed the door on the Fury (3-2-0). Gingras' biggest stop, perhaps, was on a short-handed breakaway by David Noel-Bernier before a Coliseum crowd of 3,016.

RICHMOND SIGNS FIRST PLAYERS
GINGRAS, ST. JACQUES, AND WETHERILL JOIN EXPANSION CLUB

Richmond, VA - The Richmond United Hockey League expansion franchise has signed their first players. Goaltender Maxime Gingras, Left Wing Kevin St. Jacques, and Defenseman Darren Wetherill have signed contracts for the 2003-’04 season. Gingras agreed to a two year deal.

Gingras, one of the most popular players in Richmond hockey history, led Richmond to the 1999 Kelly Cup finals. Gingras earned ECHL Rookie and Goalie of the Year honors in 1999 while setting several club and league goaltending records. Max spent part of three seasons in Richmond, playing in two All Star Games. He spent the last two seasons with Pensacola in the ECHL.

St. Jacques joins Richmond for his 12th pro season. He helped lead Indianapolis to the Central Hockey League championship in 2003 as a player-assistant coach. St. Jacques has played with championship teams in three pro leagues. St. Jacques has averaged more than a point a game for nine straight seasons.

Wetherill returns to Richmond hockey after sitting out last season. He spent four previous seasons in Richmond, including the three most successful in city hockey history. He was a key member of the 1995 Riley Cup champions, the 1996 Brabham Cup (best regular season record in the ECHL) club, and the 1999 Kelly Cup finals squad. Wetherill helped lead Fresno to the WCHL title in 2002. He was also part of two NCAA championship teams at Lake Superior State.

“We now have a solid foundation in place,” said Richmond General Manager Jeff Croop. “We have signed top players and proven winners up front, on D, and in net. Gingras, St. Jacques, and Wetherill give us proven performance and leadership,” Croop added.

Season tickets are on sale now for the 2003-’04 season. Richmond opens their inaugural UHL season at home on Friday, October 31 vs. Muskegon at the Richmond Coliseum. For more information please call 225-PUCK.
